FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 17 2016) -- Five veterans who participated in the Desert Storm ground offensive will come to Fort Benning Feb. 26 to commemorate its 25th anniversary as part of the Maneuver Center of Excellence Leader Development Program.
Operation Desert Storm, the combat phase of Operation Desert Shield, was a U.S.-led military operation involving 34 nations to expel occupying Iraqi forces from Kuwait, which Iraq had invaded and annexed months earlier.
"We are hosting this LDP for a few reasons, chief among them to provide Soldiers at the Maneuver Center a chance to learn more about this mission," said Capt. Stephen Deuble, Commander's Action Group. "We are also commemorating the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait, honoring participating units and discussing joint combined arms maneuvers."
Speakers will include retired Col. Robert Botters, who was the commander of 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment during the operation; retired Maj. Gen. Ronald Richard, 2nd Marine Division commander's assistant; retired Lt. Gen. John Sylvester, commander of 1st Brigade, 2nd Armored Division and retired Maj. Gen. Walter Wojdakowski, commander of 3rd Bn, 41st Inf. Regt.
Those interested in learning more about Desert Storm prior to the presentation can search #DesertStorm on Facebook and Twitter to follow the MCoE's posts.
The LDP will start at 3 p.m. Feb. 26 in McGinnis Wickham Hall, and will be followed by a no-host social at Fiddler's Green.
