REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- One U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command employee ensures the workforce possesses the technical and leadership skills that are required for the command's success.

Jason L. Scarborough, USASMDC/ARSTRAT Civilian Workforce Development Branch project manager, is a member of the command's Civilian Workforce Development Team that serves to support developing and retaining team members in their careers now and for the future.

"I get to serve on the Civilian Workforce Development Team, leading in workforce transformation initiatives, career development and management," Scarborough said. "I provide career advice and guidance, helping careerists with training applications, individual development plans, and currently lead a mobile one-stop shop visits to various SMDC locations.

"I love getting to help others develop and see them become more and take on more responsibility," he added.

Scarborough, who grew up in the Union Hill community outside of Hackleburg, Alabama, currently live in the Cotaco-Florette community outside Somerville, has been at SMDC for six years.

In college, Scarborough served as a cadet in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at the University of North Alabama. Upon graduation, he turned down his commission and chose to teach middle school and high school for five years.

"I asked and prayed to Jesus Christ one evening, 'what do you really want me doing in life?'" Scarborough said. "In my heart, I heard the call as an Army recruiter. I wrestled with that decision for two weeks of sleepless nights and said, 'if it is your will Lord it will all fall into place.' I turned in a 60-day notice, and was off to Fort Jackson, South Carolina. I then went to Fort Sam Houston (Texas) to serve as a combat medic. After I finished my enlistment, I joined the Army Civilian Corps.

"I got to help make this world a better place serving others, helping those who couldn't defend themselves," Scarborough said. "I served with Soldiers and officers from other countries, and served in the Army Medical Corp," Scarborough said. "My favorite thing now is serving our workforce as an Army civilian."

Scarborough has received an associate degree, two bachelor's degrees and is currently finishing a Master of Business Administration.

In his spare time, he also likes to travel, ride jet skis, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, drawing, painting, and plays the trumpet, guitar and piano.

"I have reached most of my personal goals in life, and the ones I have now are being the best husband, father and leader to my family as well as a servant for Jesus Christ," Scarborough said.

"I would like to fly back into Venezuela, go find my friend Humberto in Caracas, gather all our friends from the community and church, hike back up the mountain to the natural waterfall and slide down with friends and church family for six hours straight," he added. "I would love to enjoy a picnic and laugh and carry on for hours with them again and introduce them to my family."

Scarborough said he wants to give his all to develop the civilian workforce to support the Warfighters of 2025, 2030, 2040 and beyond. He said right now is the opportunity to build the workforce, and every action no matter the magnitude is important to making it a reality.

"I am thankful to serve with our Soldiers, civilians and contractors," Scarborough said. "Each person I have served with along the way has challenged me to become more, learn a little more each day, do my work faster, be more effective and have some fun along the way. And since I have to be away a lot from the family I love, I also try to enjoy the time with my family here at SMDC as well."
