USAG Yongsan - The respective command teams of both the 56th Infantry Division of the Republic of Korea Army and the United States Army Garrison Yongsan met on Jan. 27, at the 56th Infantry Division military post located in Hwajeon-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang to review the establishment of a communications network and participation in upcoming joint military exercises. During the meeting, the two groups briefed each other on their areas of responsibility and current projects.

The meeting was hosted by Maj. Gen. Shin Sang Beom, the Commander of the 56th Infantry Division, to follow up on topics discussed during their first meeting on Dec. 18, 2015, which was hosted by Col. Maria P. Eoff, Commander, USAG Yongsan.

Matthew Barden, the Deputy Director, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, said "the 56th Infantry Division is a close partner with the garrison and the 218th Regiment falls under the 56th Infantry Division and takes responsibility for the protection of Yongsan and nearby areas. Our collaborative efforts will lead to a safer more secure community for both Americans and Koreans in the local area."

The discussion started off with the prospect of cultivating communications and information updates in emergency situations. Due to the seriousness of the ongoing world-wide terrorism threat, the 56th Division placed emphasis on preventing terrorism and offered its assistance and cooperation to USAG Yongsan. Col. Park Yang Woo, the Force Protection and Plans Analysis Chief from the Combined Forces Command, pointed out the key to terrorism prevention depends on immediate communication and a solid response. Both sides agreed on the beneficial aspects communication and cooperation will bring to the U.S. and R.O.K. alliance.

The USAG Yongsan and R.O.K. Army collaboration reinforces the protection of USAG Yongsan and Korea as a whole. "The meeting not only serves to strengthen friendship and trust between the two countries, but also shows the commanders' commitment to the betterment of their organization, partnership, and alliance," said Barden.
