FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 10, 2016) --The READ ID Act, passed in 2005, establishes standards for the production and issuance of state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards, which include requirements for a photograph and certain biographic information - name, date of birth, height, eye color and address.
As of Dec. 31, driver's licenses and ID cards from Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico and Washington are not compliant with the standards of the act, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Fort Benning is in compliance with the REAL ID Act, and Monica Manganaro, Fort Benning Garrison Public Affairs director, gave this advice for all people planning on attending a basic training graduation:
"You should have received a letter from your Soldier's commander, giving you specific instructions on Family Day and graduation procedures. Plan your travels with the following information in mind - Fort Benning requires all visitors to show a picture ID and to be vetted prior to entering the installation."
Residents of the five specified states must possess one of the following accepted authorized government issued identification cards in addition to their driver's license:
• U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card.
• Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-551).
• Foreign passport with a temporary (1-551) stamp or temporary (I-551) printed notation on a machine readable immigrant visa.
• Employment authorization document that contains a photograph (Form I-766).
• In the case of a nonimmigrant alien authorized to work for a specific employer incident to status, a foreign passport with Form I-94 or Form I-94A bearing the same name as the passport and containing endorsement of the alien's nonimmigrant status, as long as the endorsement has not yet expired and the proposed employment is not in conflict with any restrictions or limitations identified on the form.
• School identification card with a photograph.
• U.S. military or draft record.
• U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Cards.
• Transportation Worker Identification Card.
• Native American Tribal Document.
Manganaro advised residents planning events such as weddings and Family reunions to remind their guests that they may need an escort if they don't have the proper identification.
