CAMP ZAMA, Japan (Feb. 10, 2016) -- Camp Zama hosted its first Triad Soldier Challenge with 17 competing teams Feb. 4 at the Yano Fitness Center Gym.

The U.S. Army Garrison Japan's Directorate of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation collaborated with U.S. Army Medical Department Activities-Japan to come up with this new fitness, fusion challenge for the Commander's Cup Program, which is a series of competitions throughout the year between Soldiers and Civilians of USAG Japan units.

"New events are not often added and require the sports council's approval," said Greg Zaboski, sports specialist for DFMWR, "however, the sports council, made up of unit representatives, voted and agreed that this would be a good event for their Soldiers."

Each team required one female, one male and a total of three participants.

The challenge included three events: tire roll, farmers carry and the bear crawl.

A team from U.S. Army Aviation Battalion won first place with second place going to the U.S. Army Medical Department-Public Health Command Pacific team.

Another U.S. Avn. Bn. team broke the tie with the 441st Military Intelligence Battalion of U.S. Army Japan team for third place.

These top teams completed the challenge in the shortest amount of time.

Crystal Laragione, Triad Soldier Challenge participant, said the challenge was harder than she originally thought it would be.

"I work out pretty regularly, and when I saw the events, I was really excited-- and was like…we're going to smoke them; but we didn't," said Laragione.

Sgt. Christina Fryer, Blackhawk mechanic assigned to US Avn. Bn. and first place winner, said the event was amazing and hopes to see more cross-fit challenges in the future.

Jana York, health promotion educator for MEDDAC- Japan, said this challenge incorporates all the components of the performance triad: activity, nutrition and sleep.

After participating in the event, Command Sgt. Maj. Rosalba Dumont-Carrion, command sergeant major of USAG Japan, said she was so thankful for all the participants.

"I just want to say thank you for everybody that came out. I think it's important for all of us to come out and develop as a team," said Dumont-Carrion.

"Comradery, teambuilding and having fun made for a successful event and friendly competition that many hope will be repeated again next year."
