ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- Col. Doyle Lassitter, commander, Distribution Management Center, Army Sustainment Command, passed the command of ASC's Headquarters and Headquarters Company from Maj. Chandler Fisk to Capt. Michael Rear during a change of command ceremony in Heritage Hall, here, Dec. 21.
HHC is primarily responsible for Soldier readiness, accountability and training at ASC. HHC's missions include processing awards, supporting the Family Care Plan, property accountability and helping with ceremonial and community events throughout the Quad Cities area. HHC was created in 2006 when the U.S. Army Field Support Command transitioned into ASC.
Fisk thanked those who helped him be successful while with HHC, including ASC leadership, his staff, his wife, and the community at large.
"It's been a whirlwind over the past 20 months, and I thank you for your support," he said.
Fisk, who served as the HHC commandant since May 2014, said the next step in his career will be to gain a few months of intermediate education at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Following this, he said he will return to Rock Island Arsenal before his permanent change of station in the summer.
"I am thankful for the leadership experience I have gained here," he said.
Fisk also offered advice to his replacement.
"You are entering a job that will test your patience and broaden your leadership abilities," he said. "You'll be afforded many opportunities to practice your people skills and burn your free time that you may have previously enjoyed. Welcome to one of the best offices on the island."
Lassitter was the reviewing officer for the ceremony. He also offered Rear some advice.
"Mike, I have great confidence in your ability to lead an organization, and I expect a lot of great things for your command team," he said. "Always move forward towards solutions, and remember that leadership is a gift given to you by those who follow you. Always be worthy of that gift."
Lassitter also thanked Fisk for his time with HHC.
"Maj. Fisk served this role superbly in his nearly 20 months as our commandant," he said. "It is very evident that Chandler fully committed to this command and has given extensive personal sacrifice to the Soldiers and the civilians under his responsibilities."
Fisk's wife, Kathryn, was present at the event with their three children. The command gave Kathryn a bouquet of red roses to symbolize the concern that she showed for Soldiers, civilians, and their families while at Rock Island Arsenal.
Rear's wife, Beth, and their two children were welcomed to the ASC family. Beth was handed a bouquet of yellow flowers to symbolize her arrival.
While living in the Quad Cities, Fisk's family was highly involved in the local Family Readiness Group, which is a social support group of military families. Rear said he hopes to also be highly involved with FRG and other community programs.
"We have a lot of community outreach programs I want to connect with, and try to extend," he said.
Rear said he is confident in his ability to succeed in his mission.
"I think I'm going to do pretty well -- I have a good support team," he said.
Those in attendance included: Maj. Gen. Kevin O'Connell, commanding general, ASC and his wife, Etie; Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Bryant, command sergeant major, ASC; Brig. Gen. Stephen Farmen, commanding general, Joint Munitions Command, and deputy commanding general, ASC; Command Sgt. Maj. Walton Jones, command sergeant major, JMC; and Col Lance Koenig, chief of staff, ASC.
