Fort Huachuca, Arizona -- A communications security (COMSEC) specialist with the Communications Security Logistics Activity (CSLA) is Fort Huachuca's Civilian of the Month for December.
Guy V. Padello, COMSEC auditor, has 34 years, 9 months of government service, including 22 years with the Army. Padello has been at his present assignment for 12 years, nine months. He was nominated for Civilian of the Month honors by Joe Oslund, audit team lead.
Padello's primary mission is to verify compliance with Army COMSEC policy and procedures, conduct 100-percent, on-site inventories of physical and electronic COMSEC assets, verify account personnel credentials, and identify improper practices affecting security, according to Oslund.
"As a direct result of Mr. Padello's ability to accurately run multiple forecasted schedule and budget scenarios, the CSLA Audit Team's forecasted fiscal year 16 audit schedule is nine percent or approximately $19,000 more cost efficient than the previous year's forecasted schedule," Oslund said. "These improvements were made while Padello maintained the same standards of quality and customer service that the COMSEC community has come to expect from CSLA.
"Mr. Padello is a competent and professional auditor. He was selected as one of the two auditors to audit the Tobyhanna Army Depot COMSEC accounts. The account is an especially tedious and difficult account to audit since it has more than 21,000 reportable items of COMSEC material on-hand," Oslund stated.
"During the audit, Mr. Padello's co-auditor had to return home due to a family emergency. Padello drew upon his years of experience and expertise to assess the situation and determine that he would be able to continue the audit on his own without a replacement auditor traveling out to assist him. He was able to successfully complete the audit on his own without extending the audit timeline. Mr. Padello's actions negated the need to send another auditor out to Tobyhanna Army Depot. This ultimately saved the government about $2,100 in additional traveler expenses," Oslund said.
Padello resides in Sierra Vista with his wife, Paula. When not working, he likes to play the guitar and watch football, especially his favorite team, the Arizona Cardinals.
"I love those guys," he said.
He considers serving in the military and getting his college degree in information systems among his greatest accomplishments.
"I came from the projects when I was 17. I had no goals or inspirations until I joined the military," Padello said. "The military brought me to where I am today."
When asked what advice or information he would share with others, Padello had this to say: "Enjoy your work and enjoy your co-workers. I work with some great folks. It came as a great surprise when I was chosen as the Civilian of the Month."
