ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Brig. Gen. William E. King IV, 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command, was invited to speak at the National Defense Industrial Association Quarterly CBRN Breakfast on Dec. 16 in Washington. The breakfast was attended by 70 industry professionals and government representatives.

King's presentation, Integrated CBRNE Capabilities for a Complex Security Environment, focused on how the 20th CBRNE Command is posturing for the future threat by integrating CBRNE capabilities into the Army's warfighting plans.

The CBRNE Battalion Task Force, a task force that is tailorable for each mission, has the capability to mitigate the full range of CBRNE hazards under one CBRNE Mission Command structure. The task force is responsible for establishing command support relationships between CBRNE elements and supported maneuver units, establishing and maintaining the CBRNE common operating picture, and provides mission command for CBRNE forces.

The CBRNE Task Force can provide mission command for CBRNE forces during missions that include captured material exploitation; render safe and disposal of munitions, unexploded ordnance; security force assistance; CBRN defense; support to destruction and monitoring, re-direction elimination operations; Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices; CBRNE consequence management, remediation operations; and technical escort of CBRNE material.

King highlighted how our recent experience at the Combat Training Centers and Army Warfighting Assessment have illuminated gaps in the areas of protection, contamination mitigation, characterization and situational awareness. Over the next three years, the command is partnering with the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical Biological Defense on an Advanced Technology Demonstration that will improve our joint capabilities in these areas.

"The uncertainty of the rapidly changing strategic environment with a host of potential adversaries having increasing access to CBRNE capabilities and technology requires an Army with integrated, tailorable and scalable CBRNE capability," said King. "The 20th CBRNE Command has the unique CBRNE capabilities that have been proven in combat."
