FORT DRUM, New York -- (Dec. 9, 2015) The newest member of the Mission and Installation Contracting Command contracting office here has earned the Dr. Mary E. Walker Award recognizing her 19 years of commitment, service and volunteerism as an Army spouse.
Toni Wagenbrenner was presented the award by Brig. Gen. Andrew Rohling, the acting senior commanding general for Fort Drum, during a Dec. 3 ceremony. The award is named after Dr. Walker who is the only female to receive the Medal of Honor for her volunteer service as a surgeon during the American Civil War.
Wagenbrenner joined the MICC-Fort Drum team last week as a procurement technician, filling a role that has been vacant for approximately six months. Her husband, Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Wagenbrenner of 2nd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Aviation Brigade, and their three sons were on hand to witness the award presentation.
Anthony Sligar, deputy director for the 925th CBN and MICC-Fort Drum, said he is excited to have someone who has distinguished herself with such a long track record of service on the team.
Wagenbrenner said her "deepest passion these 19 years has been assisting not only the families and Soldiers in our military communities, but also the civilian communities affiliated with our military."
Her motivation and desire to serve comes from knowing firsthand, through her husband's numerous deployments as well as her time as a Soldier, how hard it is for military families to stay connected and function with a deployed service member.
Wagenbrenner served as the Fort Eustis Enlisted and Civilian Spouses Club vice president and volunteered as a support spouse for Soldiers and families of D Company, 1st Battalion, 222nd Aviation Regiment before family readiness groups were in existence. She now volunteers as the 2-10 AVN Family Readiness Group adviser and Fort Drum Cub Scout Pack 26 treasurer.
Her contributions to Soldiers and the community included establishing a blessing basket program for Soldiers of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia; coordinating, collecting and delivering more than two tons of food during the holiday season for military families in need; shoveling snow for pregnant spouses while their husbands were deployed; and leading the coordination and preparation for several Gold Star events.
Also, she and her husband took in a family of eight into their home for 30 days and played an instrumental role in getting that family back on its feet. In 2014 Wagenbrenner secured a $10,000 grant from the Home Depot Corporation to remodel and repair the local Fort Drum Cub Scout building.
In addition, she has volunteered for the local Court Appointed Special Advocate, which assists children of abuse and neglect in New York, raising $1,000 in book donations from across the country to establish a library for these children and collecting $500 in donations for gifts.
MICC-Fort Drum and the 925th CBN provide cradle to grave contract support for supplies, services and construction in support of the Fort Drum garrison as well as the 10th Mountain Division and its supported elements. Fort Drum's ranges, training areas and facilities serve as an essential training platform for reserve component forces and units of the New York Army National Guard. MICC-Fort Drum is a subordinate unit to the 419th Contracting Support Brigade that with another two brigades and a field directorate office make up the MICC. In fiscal 2015, the MICC executed more than 36,000 contract actions valued at more than $5.2 billion across the Army, including $2.25 billion to American small businesses. The command also managed more than 600,000 Government Purchase Card Program transactions in fiscal 2015 valued at an additional $747 million.
