
FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Maj. Gen. Mark J. O'Neil thanked family, friends and fellow Soldiers for helping him attain his new Army rank.
On Friday (Dec.4), deputy commanding general of the Combined Arms Center -- Training (CAC-T), was promoted to major general by Lt. Gen. Robert B. Brown, commanding general of the Combined Arms Center (CAC).
Brown said he has presided over many promotion ceremonies, but said O'Neil's was unique. Besides a number of Soldiers in attendance, Brown noted the audience included friends from his hometown of Troy, N.Y., and classmates from Norwich University, Northfield, Vt.
"I've never seen such a diverse crowd," Brown said.
Brown said that CAC was fortunate to have O'Neil in a leadership position at Fort Leavenworth. "We get the best one-star and two-star generals in the Army," he said.
By leading CAC-T, "Mark is impacting training for the entire Army," Brown said.
Brown congratulated O'Neil saying, "We got it right by promoting him to a two-star general."
O'Neil thanked the audience for their assistance in his career.
"I'm grateful and thankful for my family, friends, mentors and fellow Soldiers who have helped get me to where I am today," he said. "I'm humbled and honored to be selected for this promotion."
O'Neil graduated from Norwich and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1986.
Later he severed as an officer in the 1st Cavalry Division, 25th Infantry Division, the 75th Ranger Regiment and a special operations organization. He deployed a number of times to Afghanistan and Iraq.
From August 2011 to December 2012, he was the executive officer for Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno. Prior to coming to Fort Leavenworth, O'Neil was the deputy commanding general for operations with the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.
Now O'Neil leads CAC-T, an organization that develops training requirements, fields training systems, delivers leader training and sustains training capabilities to support the Army.
