TIKRIT, Iraq - An Air Weapons Team from Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade destroyed a house-borne improvised explosive device Jan. 16 at Khan Bani Sad, northeast of Baghdad, after a local shaykh told the Iraqi Army about the danger.
"This HBIED was a clear threat to Iraqi civilians, and was reported by a village leader to the Iraqi Army," said Capt. Mike McLean, an Apache Longbow helicopter pilot involved in the operation.
McLean said the Iraqi Army's on-scene commander then requested a precision-strike capability from partnered ground forces to destroy the house and minimize collateral damage.
The AWT from 1-10 CAB destroyed the target with missiles.
McLean said the efforts of the Iraqi people, Iraqi Army and Coalition forces came together to rid the area of the house, which was found to have pressure-plated booby traps. He also called the operation a great example of progress in Iraq.
"This event demonstrates the growing confidence of the local population in the Iraqi Army's ability to meet the security needs of the country," McLean said.
