The Army Contracting Command took part in an Army Materiel Command Academia Day, held recently at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, where representatives from local colleges and universities received information on employment opportunities for students.

Members from ACC-APG joined other AMC organizations to promote worldwide internship opportunities throughout the AMC network.

"The Academia Day not only served as a tool to collaborate with local educational institutions, but it also highlighted AMC's 1,000 Intern Initiative to boost interest in federal service by providing 1,000 internships throughout AMC each year for the next five years," according to Christopher Newton, ACC-APG's Human Capital and Workforce Development branch chief.

AMC Commanding General Dennis L. Via spoke to the forum and shared his personal experiences and how he credited a teacher with guiding his career start.

"Today is all about our future," Via said. "I am here today because someone ignited a passion in me, a fire. I have always felt I needed to return that favor and try to ignite the same in others."

In addition to Via, participants heard remarks from Maj. Gen. Bruce T. Crawford, commanding general of the Communications-Electronics Command, as well as a series of information sessions to learn about navigating the USA Jobs website, resume techniques and intern experiences. The presentations were followed by a tour of the organizational booths established for the day-long event to highlight specific opportunities within the AMC family.

"The event offered an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary talent within the ACC ranks," said Newton, who also pointed out that many of ACC-APG's contracting workforce are graduates of the intern program.

"Our workforce is aging and many are approaching retirement," said Via. "We need to grow the future not only today, but over and over to make sure our Soldiers, who are out there in harm's way, remain the best equipped, best trained and best prepared force in the world."
