There are several programs that match practicing DOD scientists with talented high school and college students to create a direct mentor-student relationship, which provides students with an unparalleled STEM experience.

In these programs, participants receive first-hand research experience and exposure to DOD laboratories. These apprenticeship programs foster a desire in participants to pursue further training and careers in STEM. Students work with their mentors, Army scientists and engineers, to gain hands-on experience.

The apprentice programs are designed to encourage students to pursue science and engineering careers at different academic levels.

Qualified high school students are acquainted with the activities of laboratories through summer science and engineering research experiences, as well as opportunities in and exposure to scientific and engineering practice and personnel not available in their school environment.

College students, graduate students, and recent graduates (with bachelors or masters degrees) are brought into the lab year round, as research interns under the guidance of a military scientist or engineer.

The apprenticeship provides follow-on research experience for students already interested in a STEM field, supplements the curriculum they are learning in college, and helps them prepare for advanced degrees and careers in STEM research.
