Nominate candidates for CSM Doug Russell Award for Excellence in Military Intelligence

Fort Huachuca, Arizona - Nominations are being accepted for the 2016 Russell Award through March 4, 2016.

To be eligible, a candidate must be a Soldier in the grade of sergeant or below in the Active Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard. He or she must have performed actions which directly contributed to the success of the MI Corps from Jan. 1 through December 2015. The candidate must be fully eligible for continued service for at least one year after award presentation, through June 2017. Posthumous awards will not be presented.

Candidates also must meet the height and weight standards specified in AR 600-9, maintain a current passing grade on the Army Physical Fitness Test (waived for deployed nominees unable to take the APFT), and must not be under an unfavorable personnel or Uniformed Code of Military Justice action. Recipients of the Russell Award are recognized annually at a luncheon during the MI Corps Hall of Fame Week in June at Fort Huachuca.

In 1943, Russell entered the U.S. Army and began a lifelong career of military service. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II, the Korean Conflict, as well as two tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1975, after 32 years of service, Russell retired from the Army with the rank of command sergeant major. During his distinguished military career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and numerous other commendations. He then moved to Washington, D.C. where he became the director of Enlisted Services for the Association of the United States Army, a position he held from 1979 to 1993. From 1995 until his death in 2009, he held the position of president of The American Military Society. In 1999, the annual CSM Doug Russell Award was created to recognize the outstanding achievements of Soldiers within or on behalf of the Military Intelligence community.
