On 11 November 1921, three years to the day after the armistice that ended World War I, President Warren G. Harding presided over a ceremony dedicating the newly established Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. This November 11th at the very same location, many of us will participate in the National Veterans Day Observance, as an annual symbol of our Nation's appreciation to all those, living and dead, who served in our military.
Whether working or taking advantage of a day off this Veterans Day, each of us have a role in paying homage to these Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. Their service is what makes our work in and around our Nation's capital possible and important. I therefore encourage each of you to demonstrate your appreciation by pausing to consider their great courage and sacrifice this special day.
Another way to demonstrate your appreciation to those who serve is by influencing your fellow Military, Civilians, and Family members to stay safe during this holiday timeframe. As we adjust to the change in season and fall activities, take this opportunity to reengage your subordinates and coworkers about their off-duty plans. Show your commitment to our missions and to those around you by helping them effectively manage risk, both on the job and off. Our veterans are a source of pride in our Nation, and we are all an important part of the tradition they have established. Let us continue to honor them daily, especially this Veterans Day. I hope each of you have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
