Halloween events, guidance

By U.S. ArmyOctober 29, 2015

Trick-or-treating hours for Lawton and Fort Sill are for Oct. 31 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Keep you and your family safe by following these guidelines:

-- Choose light-colored costumes and add reflective or glow-in-the-dark tape to the front and back of costumes and bags.

-- Use costumes labeled "flame retardant." If you are making your own costume, use nylon or polyester materials which are flame retardant.

-- Ensure wigs and beards don't cover eyes, nose or mouth.

-- Avoid colored or decorative contact lenses unless prescribed by a doctor.

-- Put a name tag with your phone number on your children's costumes.

-- Encourage children not to wear masks that make it difficult to see or breathe. Instead choose to allow children to use nontoxic face paint or makeup.

-- Avoid oversized and high-heeled shoes that could cause children to trip.

-- If carrying wands or swords, ensure they are short and flexible.

-- As always, parents should check treats for their children.

If you are having a Halloween party, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends:

-- Keeping walking areas and stairs well-lit and free of obstacles n Keeping candle-lit jack o'lanterns away from doorsteps, walkways and curtains.
