ADELPHI, Md. (Oct. 28, 2015) -- Army scientists and engineers welcome visitors to learn about opportunities with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory at the second Open Campus Open House to be held at Aberdeen Proving Ground Nov. 3-4, 2015.

More than 700 guests have registered to discuss research that can enable scientific discoveries with the critical potential to impact national security. The Open House will create a forum for in-depth discussions about strategic fundamental science and technology opportunities for collaboration among the government, academia and industry.

"The idea behind ARL's Open Campus is to build a science and technology ecosystem that leverages the expertise to address the nation's most pressing issues in Defense," said Dr. Alma Wickenden, Associate for Research at ARL. "We hope that the conversations that begin here will continue between researchers long after they leave the Army facilities."

During the two-day event, ARL's director, Dr. Thomas Russell, will explain the philosophy and strategy of the Open Campus business model that has developed and matured over the past two years.

Some of the Army's leading researchers will highlight opportunities with ARL through one-on-one discussions during the afternoon sessions, a step toward greater engagement on projects that are ongoing.

U.S. and international collaborators are invited to learn about the business mechanisms that support doing business with government.

"We want people with different perspectives and complementary expertise to learn about ARL's research and capabilities, enabling us to work together to develop new research approaches that will push boundaries and inform the transition of future technology development," Wickenden said. "We have scheduled laboratory tours, poster sessions and talks to lay a solid foundation for what is possible."

Prior to last year's Open House, ARL published its S&T Campaign Plans, which lay out ARL's strategic science and technology campaigns and details how ARL structures its concepts for Army S&T. ARL has also posted its current collaboration opportunities for which it is seeking unique and novel approaches from the global S&T community.

These two resources are intended to serve as a roadmap for interested collaborators on how best to integrate their own vision and S&T ideas into ARL's path forward.

Since last year, Maj. Gen. John F. Wharton, commanding general of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, has championed the expansion of the Open Campus model at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
