PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Presidio's Rising Star singing competition finale was held Sept. 25 at the Hobson Recreation Center.

A packed house turned out for the performers to show why they deserved to be the next Rising Star, but there could be only one winner.

Contestants were required to sing a Beatles song a cappella, as well as performing a full rendition of a heartbreaking song. In the end, Pfc. Deonitus Phoenix Black took home top honors and $750. Runner up Airman 1st Class Victoria Vazquez was followed by third place finisher Seaman Krista Dacosta. Army won the spirit award for the most support of their contestants throughout all three weeks of the show. An Army representative accepted $300 on behalf of their unit.

Presidio Garrison Commander Col. Paul W. Fellinger acted as guest judge for the last round of competition in which eight finalists went head-to-head for top honors. Scoring was calculated using input from both judges and spectator ballots.

Although the show was shorter than in years past, the quality of performers remained high. Every year, Operation Rising Star is a hit at the Hobson Recreation Center and this year was no different.
