Troopers assigned to Apache and Comanche Troops, 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment participated in Air Assault and Sling Load training, with the help of Soldiers from the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, at Grafenwoehr Training Area, located near Rose Barracks, Germany, October 13, 2015.

Several different training events occurred throughout the day. Troopers started the first event of the day having to find an area of operation and secure it by establishing perimeter security and vehicle checkpoint while fighting back makeshift opposing forces.

"We emplaced observation points and command nodes across the training area," said Maj. Michael V. Soyka, 1st Squadron Executive Officer. "We validated our Trooper's ability to recognize the various armored vehicles, aircraft and military vessels that they will see in Sinai."

While speaking about the day's training, Soyka mentioned different situational training exercises that his unit has been a part of over the last few weeks.

"The purpose of our training over the last three weeks was to train and certify our squadron for our upcoming deployment to the Sinai Peninsula in support of the Multinational Forces and Observers Mission (MFO)," said Soyka. "To accomplish this, we conducted mission specific training with instructors from New Zealand for drivers training in new vehicles and Remote Site Commander Training, Counter Improvised Explosive Training with experts from the IED Integration Cell and Nonlethal Weapons and Riot Control Training with the 18th Military Police Brigade, located in Kaiserslautern, Germany."

Having the Dragoons work alongside Soldiers from the 12th CAB ended up being the culminating event leading up to the unit's deployment to Egypt later this year. The Troopers took to the skies, in a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter, to conduct an aerial insertion and once their boots hit the ground, established an area of operation to start their Sling Load Training.

"This training enabled us to validate our Soldiers and gave them very effective repetitions of what will be an extremely important mission for them," said Soyka. "The overall effect of our training is that our team is now solidified and our Troopers are trained and ready for our upcoming nine months in Egypt."
