YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea -- The USAG Yongsan Fire Department launched its Fire Prevention Week Campaign, Oct. 4. The Department supported this year's NFPA official theme for Fire Prevention Week, 'Hear the beep, where you sleep: Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.'

The campaign focused heavily on alerting people about the importance of smoke alarms in their homes. Due to the increasing cases of indoor fire, a functioning smoke alarm is becoming a key factor to saving lives. The Yongsan Fire Department informed the community on the significance of these alarms, along with how to use a fire extinguisher and what to do during an actual fire.

"As a Fire Inspector, I try to make sure that all the families in the (Yongsan) community are safe," said Pak Chang Bom, Fire Inspector, USAG Yongsan Fire Department. "During this Fire Prevention Week, my major goal is to educate the children on how to find out if they have a smoke alarm in their homes, and to see if it is functioning or not. This will certainly ensure a safer garrison, for working smoke alarms will save lives."

On Oct. 8, the Yongsan firefighters conducted an automobile extraction exercise, where they simulated a burning vehicle. The exercise was aimed at saving a victim (a dummy) from a car in flames.
