Before joining the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, BG Sharpsten served as the Director for Logistics Strategy and Integration on the Army G4 Staff, from June 2014 to June 2015. He provided overview and direction in the management of actions pertaining to logistics plans, strategy, doctrine, concepts, and force integration.

BG Sharpsten previously commanded the 82d Sustainment Brigade and the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Airborne) Support Squadron, both located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He also served as Commander of the 540th Quartermaster Company located at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. His multiple staff assignments include Executive Officer to the Commanding General of U.S. Transportation Command, XVIII Airborne Corps Chief of Sustainment, Executive Officer to the Commander of Joint Special Operations Command, as well as multiple assignments in the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Airborne) including Deputy Operations Officer, Squadron Executive Officer, and Squadron Support Operations Officer.

BG Sharpsten deployed on multiple combat and contingency security operations in support of U.S. national interests, including deployments to Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Kenya, Thailand, and assorted other countries in the Levant and North Africa. He also participated in humanitarian relief operations supporting refugee relief in southern Iraq in 1991, Hurricane Iniki response in Hawaii in 1992, and Hurricane Sandy response in NJ and NY in 2012.

BG Sharpsten completed his undergraduate studies at the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Quartermaster Officer Advance Course, the Command and General Staff College and the National War College. BG Sharpsten earned his Master of Business Administration from Michigan State University and a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star Medal (4 Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (4 Oak Leaf Cluster), Combat Infantryman Badge, Combat Action Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and the Pathfinder Badge. He is married to the former Gail Dart of Miami, Flori-da. They have two children; a son, Christian, Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and daughter, Taylor, a cadet at West Point.
