WIESBADEN, Germany -- 5th Signal Command kicked off its fiscal year 2016 Fit to Lead program with a 5k run and information session Oct. 1 at the Tony Bass Gym on Clay Kaserne.

The goal of the Fit to Lead program is to institutionalize a culture of health, fitness and balanced lifestyles across the command for Soldiers, civilians and family members.

Master Sgt. Strate Flessas, 5th Signal Command senior career counselor and the Fit to Lead program coordinator, said it was important to include opportunities for all members of Team Signal to participate and benefit from the program.

"We really tried to put this program into a holistic view for the Soldier and family. We wanted to include families, and we wanted to include (Department of the Army) civilians. We wanted to keep everyone together in a cohesive environment," Flessas said.

The yearlong program will feature quarterly focus areas based on the four pillars of Fit to Lead -- physical fitness, financial planning, mental well-being and education planning. Within each focus area will be challenges with certificates for successful completion, training, workshops and other learning opportunities. The first quarter focuses on physical fitness and will include a 100-mile challenge, metabolic challenge and lift to lead challenge.

Speaking at the kickoff event, Sgt. Maj. Robert Brown, 5th Signal Command G3 sergeant major, said each participant determines their own success in the program based on their goals.

"If you set smart goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound, then you will be stronger from a fitness perspective tomorrow than you are today. And if you're stronger, then Team Signal is stronger, and we have a Strong Europe," Brown said.

Also speaking at the event were representatives from the fitness center, Andrews Federal Credit Union, Army Wellness Center and the Wiesbaden Education Center, each addressing one of the pillars of Fit to Lead. Afterwards, participants could visit tables in the gym and receive information from various on-post organizations and services, including Army Community Services, SHARP, Red Cross, 5th Signal Command family readiness group, dental clinic and many more.

Carrie Waterman, a DA civilian at 5th Signal Command headquarters, said she was excited to participate in the Fit to Lead program, especially the physical fitness activities.

"From the program I hope to be healthier, work out more and live a healthier lifestyle," Waterman said.

Col. Jimmy L. Hall Jr., commander of 5th Signal Command, encouraged everyone in the command to participate and challenged them to do something they don't normally do.

"Step outside of your comfort zone. Whether you walk 10 steps a day or run 10 miles a day, do something different that you haven't done," Hall said.
