ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- A newly promoted colonel credits those who helped him on his way during his 21 years of service.

The ceremony to promote Lt. Col. Grant Morris, the new deputy chief of staff, G-3/5/7 (Operations Support), U.S. Army Sustainment Command, to colonel was held here Sept. 3. His promotion takes effect Oct. 1.

Morris said his promotion is the culmination of the support from those around him.

"It is what I once believed to be an insurmountable challenge to achieve. The folks I have worked for and who have worked for me made me successful," he said.

While in his new role as the deputy chief of staff, Morris said he hopes to help the G-3/5/7 to be prepared for anything.

"I want to reinvigorate how we plan, and how we prepare for overseas contingency operations. Specifically we're looking at theater planning and how we would, as a headquarters, react to large-scale contingencies," he said. "Reinvigorate the concepts we used to know prior to the last 14 years of protracted war."

Morris, who was the chief of current operations in the G-3/5/7, recently returned to ASC at Rock Island Arsenal after attending the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program (ASLSP) starting in 2013. The School of Advanced Military Studies hosts ASLSP, which is a 24-month graduate-level program designed to prepare senior military leaders for positions of significant responsibility.

Maj. Gen. Kevin O'Connell, commanding general, ASC, said he was pleased Morris came back to ASC.

"It's a great turn of events to come back here and be promoted to colonel," said O'Connell.

Though optional, Morris reaffirmed his oath of office, which O'Connell administered.

Morris's family and friends attended the event, along with approximately 40 personnel.

Notable attendees included Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Bryant, command sergeant major, ASC, retired Maj. Gen. Yves Fontaine, former ASC commanding general, and retired Brig. Gen. Brian Layer, former ASC deputy commanding general.
