The Fort Bragg Warrior Transition Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Company said farewell to its outgoing commander, Capt. Cassandra Newson, and welcomed its new leader, Capt. Gary Freeman, in a change of command ceremony, Sept. 17, at the Fort Bragg Warrior Transition Battalion Complex.
Freeman is a native of Hampton, Virginia. He enlisted in the Army in March 1998, as a petroleum supply specialist.
He served on active duty for two years, then transitioned to the Virginia Army National Guard in August 2000.
Upon graduating from college and completion of his National Guard service obligation, Freeman re-entered the Army through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia in November 2006.
Before taking command, Freeman served as the chief of Logistic Operations for 44th Medical Brigade.
"To the Soldiers and civilians of the Warrior Transition Battalion, I am truly honored to serve you as your commander," said Freeman. "I look forward to many rewards and challenges of the near future."
Newson, a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, joined the Army ROTC in 2004 while attending the University of Memphis, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in August 2008.
"Helping people is a very big part of my life, I was very fortunate to be selected to serve as a company commander in the Warrior Transition Battalion.
"My positive attitude, willingness to listen and happy spirit has led to over 300 Soldiers successfully transitioning back to their Army units or veteran status," said Newson.
