Smith spent approximately 30 minutes at the Polar Bear battalion reminiscing about military life and learning about their unit's history.
Smith was a PFC assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division during WWII (1945) in Italy. After the war he moved back to Keene Valley, NY, where he worked as a carpenter and lived with his wife and three daughters.
He worked in Plattsburgh, NY, at Plattsburgh Air Force Base Family Housing office. His wife, who passed in 2008, served in the Women's Army Auxillary Corps. His surviving daughters are Brenda Smith and Darlene Gero. Interestingly, he served in the same company as Sen. Bob Dole during the same time though they never met. He is currently 91 years old.
