TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, Pa. -- An industrial engineer and Master Black Belt at Tobyhanna was selected as one of the Army Materiel Command's (AMC) top 10 employees for 2014.

Brian Rawhouser was recognized with the Louis Dellamonica Award for Outstanding AMC Personnel for his work supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the depot. Tobyhanna is part of AMC.

In his role in the Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Directorate, Rawhouser spearheads belt projects, Lean events and other industrial engineering-based work efforts focused on improving the performance of depot processes in both mission and mission support organizations. As the depot's Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Master Black Belt, he manages, mentors and teaches LSS belt candidates on their process improvement projects.

"Brian possesses a unique blend of deep understanding of quantitative tools as well as a strong sense of pragmatism," said Brad Jones, chief of the CPI Directorate. "He is serious-minded but an extremely likeable professional. His mentees are very comfortable engaging with him as they know what a skilled and accomplished teacher he really is."

Rawhouser is honored to win the award and credits his commitment to quality and efficiency as his motivation.

"I come in each and every day just trying to make an impact at Tobyhanna so that we can deliver the highest quality product as efficiently as possible to our customers, so to receive recognition for what I see as simply doing my job on a daily basis is really quite an honor," he said.

According to the nomination package, Rawhouser undertook a colossal responsibility in conducting his own LSS project last year focused on the depot's materiel induction process, which resulted in winning the LSS Excellence Award Program -- Project Team Award. The project encompassed both Tobyhanna and Defense Logistics Agency processes and resulted in more than $450,000 in cost avoidances over a three-year period and a 69 percent reduction in process lead time.

As Tobyhanna's team lead for CPI projects, Rawhouser leads the project managers that are responsible for designing and executing the Mixed Model Moving Line. This line creates consistent, cost-effective operations while minimizing inventory and improving productivity. During the award period, the project saved approximately $1.1 million due to a 30 percent reduction in labor and a 65 percent reduction in repair time for the systems involved.

For the past several months, Rawhouser served as acting chief of the Quality Assurance Division, taking on additional responsibilities within the directorate. Jones said he has thrived in all of his roles.

"He does a stellar job. His ability to forge a path forward through the most difficult situations makes him a force multiplier for the depot and a very deserving winner of the Dellamonica Award," said Jones.

Rawhouser attributes much of his success to working with highly-skilled and dedicated professionals.

"I look at this honor not just as an individual award but also a reflection of all the great people and teams that I have been able to work with," he said. "The success of many of my projects has relied on those around me, and I have been fortunate enough to have worked with countless dedicated individuals."

The Louis Dellamonica Award was established to recognize outstanding work accomplishments that have significantly contributed to AMC's mission and overarching goals and objectives. Nominees are judged on how their initiatives measurably improve their work environment and AMCs mission, how they motivate and inspire fellow employees to improve or increase the quality of their own work, and how well they are viewed by peers, subordinates and supervisors.
