REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- More than 350 attorneys work in the Army Materiel Command legal enterprise, and Walter King with the AMC Legal Center, Redstone Arsenal was recognized as the best of the best.
King received the Joyce I. Allen Attorney of the Year Award, which recognizes the AMC attorney who best exemplifies the highest professional standards in the quality of legal advice provided to clients in AMC and the Army. He received his award at AMC's annual Continuing Legal Education Program in Atlanta, Aug. 12.
"It's an honor to be recognized by your higher headquarters and your peers," said King.
King works for the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, as the lead attorney for environmental and real estate law for the Garrison-Redstone Arsenal.
According to the award citation, King preserved Redstone's Enhanced Use Lease project Redstone Gateway, enabling Redstone to receive a $2.5 million investment for improvements on the Arsenal. In addition, King provided training to ensure the proper and safe disposal of waste munitions in accordance to state and federal regulations.
"Often these type of awards are about being in the wrong place at the right time," said King. "It's when something comes across your desk that requires a lot of attention. That is what gives you the opportunity to gain recognition, but it also takes a lot of time. That is the great thing about our office."
King shared the recognition with his colleagues.
"We are a close-knit office," said King. "Everyone is really supportive and good about working together so you have time to devote to your major project."
The Joyce I. Allen Attorney of the Year Award is the most prestigious award given by the AMC command counsel.
"Walter is really the best of the best," said Nat Causey, associate counsel for the AMC office of command counsel. "He is an outstanding lawyer and a passionate advocate for AMC and the Arsenal. I can think of no one more deserving for this award."
King has worked for the AMCOM legal office since 2008, when he retired from the Air Force Judge Advocate General. He received his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and his Master's in Law at George Washington University.
