FORT BENNING, Ga., (Sept. 9, 2015) -- Bridges on Lindsey Creek Parkway will undergo construction to replace deck heads.
The bridges, still structurally sound, were designed in the 1970s and have come to the end of their 50-year design life.
Construction to Lindsey Creek bridges is expected to disrupt both outgoing and incoming traffic along I-185 on Fort Benning crossing the Upatoi Creek, said Capt. Tariel Barragan, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
"The flow of traffic will be affected, because it will be down to one lane," Barragan said.
During construction the speed limit will be posted at 35.
"There is signage out there indicating what type of work is being done and the speed limit," Barragan said. "There are people's lives (at stake) out there. The work zone speed limits are there for not only the motorists' safety, but also the safety of the work crews on the side of the road."
Construction will be completed in several phases, Barragan said.
The first phase, putting up environmental control measures, is underway.
"Once they're done with the silt fencing, which is an environmental control measure to prevent debris from going into Upatoi Creek and to keep disturbed soil on the construction sight, they can begin the shoulder improvements," Barragan said.
Shoulder improvements, to support the transition of the lanes, are scheduled to begin Sept. 15 and are expected to take three weeks.
"During the course of those shoulder improvements, the lanes adjacent to the shoulders will be closed. Southbound and northbound lanes will be funneled into a single lane of travel going each way," Barragan said.
Crossovers will be constructed on the north and south side of Upatoi Creek to connect incoming and outgoing lanes of Lindsey Creek Parkway. Crossover construction should take three to four weeks.
"Once the crossovers are done, the northbound bridge deck, (exiting Fort Benning), will be replaced," Barragan said.
While the bridges are under construction, traffic on bridge decks not under construction will be two way single lanes. Northbound traffic will cross the median on the south crossover onto the southbound (incoming) lane of Lindsey Creek Parkway and then travel across the bridge spanning the Upatoi Creek, then back across the median to continue normal use of north bound I-185, according to Barragan.
Construction of the northbound bridge deck is expected to last four months.
"Once the (northbound) bridge deck is replaced and after it has been approved, demolition of the other bridge will start and traffic will be diverted to the north side," Barragan said.
The expected completion date for bridge construction is end of summer 2016.
