WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Sophomore Ahmad Bradshaw will be the starting quarterback when Army West Point opens its 2015 football season Friday night against Fordham, second-year head coach Jeff Monken announced Aug. 31.
Bradshaw and senior A.J. Schurr were locked in a battle for the starting position all through camp. After analyzing practice and scrimmage films, Monken settled on Bradshaw as the starter.
"Give credit to both Ahmad and A.J., they both worked very hard," Monken said. "Ahmad was a little bit sharper and A.J. missed some time with some minor injuries after sitting out spring ball. Ahmad will be our starting quarterback and we know we have a very capable backup in A.J. who really knows our offense. "
A native of Chicago, Ill., Bradshaw will be making his first career start. Bradshaw played a season at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School before joining the Black Knights.
Schurr started two games last season and competed in all 12. He rushed for 320 yards and three scores and threw for 242 yards and another touchdown.
Army will kick-off its season under the lights at Michie Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. CBS Sports Network will carry the game live to a national audience.
Following the Fordham contest, Army West Point will play at Connecticut before returning home for its first home Saturday contest of the year as the Black Knights welcome Wake Forest on Sept. 19 at 12 p.m.
Army West Point goes back on the road for two games before returning on Oct. 10 against Duke and the next week opposite Bucknell in the celebration of 125 years of Army football on Oct. 17. The final two home games are in November with Tulane coming to West Point on Nov. 14 and Rutgers closing out the home season on Nov. 21. All home games kick off at 12 noon.
