Lieutenant Colonel Jon Gardner enlisted in the Army in 1990 as an Infantryman and was assigned to B Co. 1st Ranger Battalion. While in 1st Battalion, he served in various positions from Machine Gunner to Fire Team Leader and deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm.

He earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1998 from San Francisco State University and received a commission as an Infantry Officer. While serving as an Infantry Officer, LTC Gardner was assigned to 2/5 Cav, 1st Cavalry Division as a Mechanized Platoon Leader and HQ's 75th Ranger Regiment as the Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment Executive Officer, Regimental HHC Executive Officer, and Assistant S-4.

LTC Gardner also served as the Commander of E Co. 2/58 Infantry (Infantry OSUT) and C Co. 3/89 Cavalry (Dismounted Reconnaissance).

In 2005, LTC Gardner completed the Psychological Operations Officer Qualification Course and immediately deployed with A Co. 8th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne) to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon his return, he served as the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) S-8 and then as a Doctrine Division Chief at the Special Warfare Center and School.

In 2011, LTC Gardner graduated from the Command and General Staff College and earned a Master's Degree in Administration from Central Michigan University.

In 2011, LTC Gardner served as the Commander of B Co. 1st Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), and in 2012, he served as the Operations Officer, then as the Executive Officer, for 7th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne). LTC Gardner's most recent assignment was with Special Operations Command-Europe, where he served as the Military Information Support Operations (MISO) Division Chief.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and multiple campaign service medals. He has also earned the Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Egyptian Parachutist Badge
