FORT BENNING, Ga., (Aug.12, 2015) --At Fort Benning, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers means better opportunities for all Soldiers.
Although the program, founded in 1989, was originally for the benefit of the more than half of all U.S. Soldiers who were single, these days the program welcomes all Soldiers - all ranks and ages - as well as authorized Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation patrons, including civilians.
BOSS members participate in activities - including overnight trips and volunteer opportunities - and they benefit from various discounts and free passes to shows and sporting events, said Staff Sgt. Bret Coffman, BOSS president.
"The BOSS Program is based off of three pillars: quality of life, community service and recreation and leisure," Coffman said. "This is to keep the primary focus on the Soldiers. We do this by offering interesting activities to get them out in the community and introduce them to new people."
Fort Benning has over 90,000 Soldiers and being able to get information out to them about events that are volunteer- based, or recreational, is important to morale, welfare and recreation, Coffman said.
"We want our Soldiers to have rewarding experiences by helping other people, whether this is through volunteer opportunities, or with the recreational events we offer," Coffman said. "It is a pleasure to get out and interact with the community. The Families are right there with us, for example painting a house or cheering for our home team."
"A lot of people have the perception that BOSS is a program for just the single Soldiers, when in actuality the program is the voice of the Soldier. We want to let people know that no matter what rank or position, you can come talk to the BOSS president," Coffman said. "The BOSS president has an open door policy, and sometimes it's good to discuss issues that might be concerning to a particular individual or group. Also, anything that needs to be repaired, or a program that is not operating quite right, are issues the BOSS president can address. It is our mission to make life better for the Soldier."
BOSS meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month, and are a time to share ideas and concerns. Refreshments are always served. For more information and meeting locations, call 706-604-7675 or visit www.benningmwr.com/BOSS.
