FORT GORDON, Ga. (Aug. 7, 2015) -- Now that school is back in session for the local community, swim season is officially winding down.

Effective immediately, the Fort Gordon outdoor pool and spray park are closed on weekdays and remain open on weekends through Sept. 27. Saturday hours for the pool are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday hours are noon to 6 p.m. For those who can't wait until next year, the Fort Gordon indoor pool is open year-round and is a viable option. Pool usage is free for anyone possessing a valid military ID card, to include family members, retirees, and Department of Defense civilians.

The pool is seven lanes wide and 50 meters long with depths ranging from 3 feet 6 inches to 12 feet deep. Its water is heated and stays 82 degrees year-round, making it an ideal retreat from cooler weather.

There are showers, lockers, changing areas, and wheelchair lifts for those requiring assistance.

Primarily a "fitness and learning" pool, guests can sign for a variety of swim classes and lessons. It is also open for recreational swimming and can be used for basketball, water polo, volleyball, and diving.

Fort Gordon's Aquatics manager, Tamara Moser, suggests anyone wishing to use the pool during its least busy times of days should consider going between 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"The busiest times of the day at the indoor pool are from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for unit (physical training), 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for lunchtime swim, and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. when people are just getting off work," Moser said.

"Family Fun Night" occurs every Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Moser said it is a time for the community to participate in open recreational swimming. Valid ID cardholders are permitted a maximum of two guests during open recreation swims.

"We will have additional open recreation swim on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon, starting Oct. 1 until the outdoor pool opens for the 2016 season," Moser said.

The pool is manned by two or more certified American Red Cross trained lifeguards at all times.

The indoor pool is located in Building 21608 on Barnes Avenue. Operating hours are as follows: 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to noon Saturday; closed Sunday. The pool is also subject to closure during special events.

The best way to stay up to date with the most current information regarding the indoor pool is to follow Fort Gordon Aquatics on Facebook.
