As temperatures soar to record heights this summer, a cool dip in the Baumholder Lake can be very inviting, but don't underestimate the dangers of cold currents and the distances to the platform and trampoline in the middle of the lake.

The trampoline is 60 meters from the shore and the platform is 70 meters out. The cold currents in the lake can also catch you by surprise and increase the difficulty of reaching your goal. Even the strongest of swimmers are often caught off guard when they swim out to these water platforms that seem to call out and challenge them to try their luck.

The German lifeguards, recognizable by the letters DLRG on their shirts, keep a close watch on swimmers but their presence is no reason to become complacent. Parents should supervise their children at all times once they enter the lake. Admission to the lake is free but remember that even though lifeguards are present, use of the lake is at your own risk.

Lifeguard supervisor, Bernd Staudt, tells visitors there is an area of the lake marked off where they can use a life vest or air mattress if they are not good swimmers. Although not forbidden, life vests and air mattresses should not be used when swimming out to the platform or trampoline and by no means should weak swimmers attempt to reach these two locations.

Do not over estimate your abilities while at the lake and if you drink alcohol, don't go swimming. If you are injured, contact a life guard immediately. They are there for your safety and to help in any way they can.

The lake also has a large picnic area within the fence behind the life guard hut which is not for public use. However, if you want to use the grill in the picnic area, contact Staudt or another life guard.

Your behavior should also not disturb fellow guests within the fenced in area so be a good ambassador and respect the privacy of our host nation guests.

Another thing to consider while enjoying the summer weather is to stay hydrated. Lack of fluids in your body can cause dizziness, nausea, lead to possible vomiting and could earn you an unexpected trip to the hospital. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, and don't overdue your exposure to the sun and the heat.

Keep in mind that the instructions of the lifeguard supervisor or any other DLRG member must always be followed when visiting the lake.

Baumholder Lake is an excellent location to help beat the summer heat and get to know our host nation friends. So get out and make new friends, enjoy the summer and always keep personal safety in the forefront.
