WASHINGTON (June 26, 2015) -- Friends, family and staff gathered to celebrate the retirement of Col. Martin D. Kerkenbush, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington command surgeon, during a farewell ceremony held inside the Town Hall building at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va.

Kerkenbush received the Legion of Merit for this work as the director of the command surgeon directorate and senior medical advisor to the commanding general. His grasp of health service support assisted in identifying and establishing mitigation strategies for associated gaps in both staffing and command and control, enhancing the National Capital Region's posture.

Following the ceremony, Kerkenbush participated in a Department of the Army retirement ceremony in Conmy Hall as the reviewer of troops.

Later in the day he and his family conducted a public wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, Va.

Kerkenbush retires after 27 years of service and will return to his home state of South Dakota.
