FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 17, 2015) -- The Fourth of July is a day for Americans to celebrate their independence marking the historic day in 1776 when the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.
This year is no different as Fort Benning and its Soldiers, Families and surrounding community members will celebrate their independence at 3 p.m. June 27 on York Field.
"Fort Benning hosts the Independence Celebration on the last Saturday of June every year because we've found this to be a huge success," said Bridgett Siter, publicity and marketing specialist with the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Siter added that approximately 20,000 people attended last year's celebration.
"We want to celebrate our independence with our neighbors, and they'll have no problem accessing post through the I-185 gate. We expect a lot of traffic, so please give yourself extra travel time and make sure everybody in your party 16 and older has a photo ID. Just to make sure that everyone feels comfortable, we'll have plenty of security staff on site, and they'll conduct random vehicle and bag checks to keep us all safe," Siter said.
The day will be filled with events for all ages and ending with a fireworks show after dusk.
"We're bringing back the carnival with unlimited rides for the cost of a wristband," Siter said. "As always, we'll have more than 25 of those inflatable bounce houses for the kids. They can jump as long as they like, it's free. There are lots of other free activities for kids and grownups alike," Siter said.
"I think one of the greatest draws, particularly for our civilian friends and neighbors, is the opportunity to jump from a 34-foot airborne training tower. It's free, like everything else and it's manned by Airborne School cadre who make sure everyone is safe. Of course, the greatest attraction is the 'show.' It starts with the high-speed Ranger demonstrations, which include insertion and extraction techniques, with helicopters and fast ropes," Siter said. "Then the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band performs a medley of patriotic classics choreographed to a massive display of fireworks. The grand finale will give you chills."
