JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (May 29, 2015) -- A contract specialist from Fort Drum, New York, has been selected for an opportunity to obtain a graduate degree through the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

Rosalind Shoemaker, a contracting specialist with the 925th Contracting Battalion and Mission and Installation Contracting Command-Fort Drum, New York, has been accepted into the Naval Postgraduate School Masters of Science in Program Management.

She will be enrolled in distant learning classes in 2016, enabling her to still work at Fort Drum.

"The selection into the Naval Post Graduate School means a lot to me," Shoemaker said. "It is a very competitive program. I applied last year and didn't get approved for funding, so I was extremely pleased to hear I was approved this year."

Shoemaker already has an extensive educational background. She received her first Bachelor of Science degree in 1998, majoring in Business Administration. In 2011, she obtained a second Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.

"I am always looking for ways to increase my knowledge base," Shoemaker said. "I am hoping that by completing my master's degree it will create more opportunities in my career field for me to advance. A master's degree is not required for my current position, so I think it shows leadership and my dedication to improving my skills as an employee."

The degree program is designed to provide acquisition professionals in DOD and other federal agencies an acquisition defense-focused advanced degree in a distance-learning format. The curriculum is designed to provide acquisition professionals the knowledge, skills and abilities to lead and manage more effectively. Shoemaker will engage in the study of concepts, methodologies, and analytical techniques necessary for successful leadership of programs or projects within complex organizations. The program will allow her to focus on problem-solving and decision-making within the acquisition environment using case studies, teaming exercises, hands-on applications, active participation, research and integrative exercises.

"I am looking forward to this opportunity," Shoemaker said. "I very much look forward to continuing my education and think this program will be a good fit for me and my organization. It will provide me the valuable knowledge and experience that will carry-over to my position as a contract specialist."

In May 2010, Shoemaker joined the MICC as a contract specialist at MICC-Fort Drum.

"My current position requires me to become Level II certified within two years of placement," She said. "I received my Level II certification in September 2011, eight months early. I received my Level III certification in December 2014."

"Ros has accomplish so many great things this year, and her selection for the NPS was extremely well deserved," said Anthony Sligar, deputy to the commander of the 925th CBN and MICC-Fort Drum contracting office. "Ros is the 925th CBN and MICC-Fort Drum fiscal 2015 2nd quarter civilian of the quarter, she participated in the Operational Contracting Support Joint Exercise 2015, she continues to be an amazing mentor and trainer to our Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Contracting noncommissioned officers, and she is a top performing contracting specialist. This selection was the icing on the cake for an amazing year. I am extremely proud of her and extremely grateful that she is part of our team."
