FORT GORDON, Ga. (May 22, 2015) - Communities from around the Central Savannah River Area all gathered Saturday at the Evans Towne Center to celebrate Armed Forces Day during Thunder Over Augusta.
The day was full of children activities, musical performances to include the U.S. Army Signal Corps Band, military static displays, exhibitions, retail and food vendors.
"Whether you are a family member, Soldier on a static display, or just citizens who want to show support for Armed Forces Day, I cannot thank you enough," said Maj. Gen. Stephen G. Fogarty, the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon commanding general. Fogarty presented the opening speech for the afternoon activities and performances at the event.
Throughout Saturday, spectators watched boxing exhibitions, a lumberjack show, motocross stunt show by Team FMX, aircraft flyovers, and sky divers sailing into the park area. Retailers and food vendors lined the walkways alongside inflatable attractions for children, and military equipment static displays.
"We're over here listening to the band and watching motorcycle FMX racers," said Navy Veteran Bill Johnson surrounded by family and his grandchildren. Each year, he comes to the event every chance he gets, especially to watch the fireworks show, which he always looks forward to.
"Thunder Over Augusta is really a unique way for a local community to celebrate its military neighbors," said Fogarty.
Fort Gordon is the largest employer in the CSRA with a $2 million impact on the local community. Service members, government civilians, contractors, continue to function in global signal, cyber, and intelligence operations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
"As we attend this function today many members of our workforce are actually at work in those facilities on post supporting Americans and our allies who are in harm's way as we sit here this afternoon. I wish I could share in detailsabout what your neighbors do," he said. "They can't do it alone. They are dependent on great communities that provide great schools, and job opportunities."
Service members currently serving in the military and veterans of each military branch stood up and were recognized.
As a reminder, Fogarty wished all who showed to support the military community to have a safe and enjoyable upcoming Memorial Day weekend and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
