On 30 May 1868, then Congressman James A. Garfield gave an address at Arlington National Cemetery encouraging Americans to remember the heroic sacrifice of all those who "accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue…here let them rest, asleep on the Nation's heart, entombed in the Nation's love!" This sentiment should have special significance for us on this Memorial Day, 25 May 2015, as we strive to both commemorate fallen service members and protect the Nation and freedom for which they sacrificed.

Along with Memorial Day's somber remembrance, many of us will use this holiday weekend to kick-off the season of warmer weather, time-off and travel. As you enjoy the upcoming summer months, I hope that you will keep in mind the safety of your coworkers, loved ones and yourselves. Historically, we have experienced some of our most severe off-duty accidents during the spring and summer timeframe, and I therefore encourage all commanders and leaders to promote awareness of the risks and mitigation measures associated with driving, riding motorcycles, sports, and water-related activities throughout the season. Resources to assist you with this are available at https://safety.army.mil/MEDIA/SeasonalSafetyCampaigns/SpringSummer2015.aspx.

Whether you will be participating in our National Memorial Day Observance on May 25th at Arlington National Cemetery, spending time with loved ones or simply enjoying the holiday weekend, I encourage you to pause to consider the debt of gratitude we owe the men and women that this day commemorates.

I hope that each of you have a safe Memorial Day and summer season.
