ANSBACH, Germany (May 8, 2015) -- More than 100 Soldiers and Family members gathered to hear the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, speak at the 2015 U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach National Day of Prayer Luncheon Wednesday.

In his keynote speech to the USAG Ansbach community, the Most Rev. Timothy Broglio spoke about the importance of building community through intentional acts of compassion and service.

Four Ansbach-based chaplains of diverse faith backgrounds offered prayers for the nation, the community, hope, and freedom.

Upon conclusion of Broglio's remarks, Col. Christopher M. Benson, the USAG Ansbach commander, presented Broglio with a plaque in gratitude of his service to the community.

Following the prayer service, participants were invited to reconvene in the Katterbach Airfield Chapel Fellowship Hall for a catered lunch and cake-cutting ceremony.

The National Day of Prayer is a congressionally designated annual observance held the first Thursday of May when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation." Each year since its inception, the president has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.

The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952, although earlier days of fasting and prayer had been established by the Second Continental Congress from 1775 until 1783, and by President John Adams in 1798 and 1799. Most presidents have issued annual or special occasion proclamations for a national day of prayer, with the exceptions of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.
