FORT SILL, Okla. (May 7, 2015) -- Let me introduce myself.

My name is Monica Guthrie and I am your newest writer at the Cannoneer.

First and foremost, I am a Texan (but don't let that damage your opinion of me). I'm also prior-service Army and served as the public affairs specialist for the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade at Hunter Army Airfield in beautiful Savannah, Ga. I got out, moved to Tennessee, married a Florida-Soldier, lived in Kentucky, moved to Korea and now we have arrived here -- and I'm ready to see what this place has to offer.

Unfortunately, many people I have met tell me there isn't anything to do here, or that everything there is to do here is "lame." I refuse to believe it's true. I had a blast in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we didn't have a rattlesnake festival or roller derby. I can't believe there isn't anything "not-lame" to do here. It just might take a little more work to find.

That's why I need your help. I'm making a bucket list of all the things I should try to do before big Army moves us again. For those of you who have lived here for a few years, I look to you to nudge me in the right direction.

What makes Southwest Oklahoma distinct? What festival do I need to go to? What food do I need to try? Who do I need to meet? I want to know and you have the answers.

Each week I'll share with you the experiences I have had in this part of the world and perhaps by the time the Army moves us again (hopefully it won't be too soon, this is pretty close to home for us) you'll find something about the area you didn't know before. Even more so, I hope you get out and try something new.

NextIn a couple weeks, I'll be divot stomping and dodging horses at the Polo match May 17, but I'll need something to do after that. What is your favorite part of Southwestern Oklahoma culture that I need to experience?
