REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (May. 5, 2015) -- Whenever there is a possibility of losing something of value, we call it a risk. In the business world, risks can come in many forms and may have a variety of causes, such as flaws in production or design, injuries, loss of equipment or lives. The goal of risk management is to reduce exposure to threats before they impact any resources or assets we want to protect.

The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center, is now employing a tool called Project Recon. This Research, Development and Engineering Command tool enables various DOD organizations to analyze, manage, and link projects and programs into a centralized database.

This is a web-based application that multiple users can access simultaneously, unlike an Excel spreadsheet. It has unlimited data storage and although classified information is not permitted, it is secure For Official Use Only information. Access to the information is restricted to those who need to know.

The software is easy to use, includes many built-in reporting options, and has a discussion function so that teams can attach briefings, documents, or have blog-like discussions that are logged for future reference. The software can be accessed from DOD and off-site locations with an AKO Single Sign-On CAC Authentication and nothing is ever permanently deleted due to its 100% traceability of data history.

"Risk Recon provides a common operating picture as a management tool allowing senior leadership to make informed decisions," said Tim McDowell, AMRDEC Internal Controls Administrator. "AMRDEC's initial entry point for Risk Recon is targeted for Managers' Internal Controls Risks. The larger, long-range goal is to allow greater insight into our operational and mission risks as a benefit to our customers by better assuring quality of services and products."

"We started in April with a small group of trainees from all directorates. This diverse team will help determine proper folder structure, access controls, and procedures for AMRDEC users" added David McGraw, AMRDEC's alternate Internal Controls Administrator.

This business application software tool is designed to be used by Program Management Offices, Integrated Project Teams and any other groups performing risk management. It will be integrated by the end of the year within AMRDEC.

AMRDEC is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers. AMRDEC employs nearly 11,000 civilian scientists, researchers, and engineers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
