Fort Huachuca, Arizona - Col. Joseph Keeler, staff judge advocate, recognized the Fort Huachuca Tax Center Soldier volunteers at a closing ceremony Friday.
This ceremony marked the end of this year's tax season for nine Soldiers who operated the center.
"It's an honor and a privilege for me to be here today as we officially close the Tax Center and recognize these great Soldiers for their significant contributions," said guest speaker, Garrison Commander, Col. Thomas A. Boone.
"The tax center was very, very successful this year," said Capt. Nicole Oberjuerge, officer in charge of the Tax Center. "We had a great team and it was a really good experience-- I'm glad we could help people the way we did."
This year Soldiers at the Tax Center assisted 1,550 clients, completing a total of 2,818 federal and state returns.
Volunteers at the facility helped Soldiers, Families and retirees receive over $3,780,632 in federal and state refunds, saving them $482,834 in tax preparation fees.
Staff Sgt. Andre Carrion, senior tax preparer and acting chief of operations, has been volunteering at the Tax Center for two years. "We helped everybody out as best as we could," Carrion explained. "Most people left here happy."
Carrion received an Army Commendation Medal for his initiative and leadership at the Tax Center.
