TEAM BLISS, Texas--A team of cheerleaders from Fort Bliss captured the Spirit Cheerleading Championship title in Rio Rancho, N.M., Saturday.
The National Cheerleaders Association hosted the NCA/NDA New Mexico Spirit Championship at Rio Rancho High School, where more than 37 teams, made up of five-year-olds to high school students, competed in several different divisions. Students from Texas and New Mexico attended the one day competition.
Fort Bliss' SKIESunlimited Competition Cheerleaders, under the direction of Coach Amy Thomas, secured first place in the Recreational-A Division. The 23-girl squad, ages five- to 12-years-old spent three months preparing for the two-minute and 30-seconds routine, which included cheering, stunting, tumbling, and dancing.
Among the competitors were teams from El Paso, Roswell, N.M., Las Cruces, N.M., Albuquerque, N.M., and Rio Rancho. It was an all day event, starting with registration at 7 a.m. and ending with the last awards presentation at 7 p.m.
This was the first competition of the Team Bliss season, and the squad is preparing for two additional NCA competitions in the near future. They will be performing at the Americas High school at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5, and the public is invited to attend.
