Members of the 65th Medical Brigade recently took part in the 2015 KATUSA-U.S. Soldier Friendship Week from April 13-17, 2015. This year's friendship week, marked the 39th annual edition of the friendship celebration designed to build esprit de corps and camaraderie amongst American Soldiers and Korean Augmentees to the U.S. Army, commonly referred to as "KATUSAs."

The 65th joined other Army Garrison commands in Area II in a variety of athletic and cultural events and were treated to a Korean Pop Concert and martial arts exhibitions.

The 'Mighty' 65th Medical Brigade proved their bonds were strong by sweeping four of the six events and winning top unit honors.

Eighth Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Bernard Champoux spoke at the end of the week-long festivities at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul by addressing the Soldiers and KATUSAs that were present on the importance of the friendship and the bonds shared between them.

"The time spent between KATUSAs and U.S. Soldiers promotes a mutual understanding of both of our nation's cultures, customs, and histories," said Champoux, "and through that experience we develop a common bond that ties us together for life."

"No other country in the world voluntarily allows their sons to serve under the command of a foreign military," Champoux continued. "That the Republic of Korea has done so for over six decades is a testament to the level of cooperation that exists between our two nations."

Also speaking during the ceremony was Yongsan Garrison Commander, Col. Maria Eoff who offered her adulation towards the participants and provided encouragement to continue fostering the many friendships made.

"You should be proud of your accomplishments this past week," said Eoff. "I challenge you to carry that pride with you as you continue to serve side-by-side in the defense of freedom on the Korean peninsula."

The sporting events in Area II that the 65th Medical Brigade won consisted of soccer, basketball, softball and the 5-km fun run only the tug-of-war and team challenge events elluded them. The overall trophy and battle flag were also captured by the Brigade.

The KATUSA-U.S. Soldier Friendship Week represented an opportunity to confirm the strong bonds between the U.S. and the Republic of Korea. This four-day event showed the true value of the Korean and U.S. friendship. It was a week of meaningful and unforgettable memories shared between longtime allies and new friends.
