Watch your wallet

An Army veteran has been charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission for fraud, and had his assets frozen, after being accused of falsely telling investors, many of them soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas he was a licensed and registered securities investor. He promised to double or triple money within 120 days, and wrote on his website that he specialized in "military deployment and redeployment investment solutions." He wasn't registered, and he and his firm "have no evident experience," the SEC said in a release.

WHAT TO WATCH: the Veteran and his firm, LB Stocks and Trades Advice LLC, are not the first and not the last to use a connection to the military to drum up business. The SEC provides advice to soldiers and their families on investments, including how to avoid fraud targeted at military personnel.

What is a Volksmarch?

Volkssport (People's Sport) encompasses Volksmarch (People's Walk) and other forms of non-competitive physical fitness. The primary sport, walking, is ordinarily a 10 kilometer route (6.2 miles) on scenic trails along bodies of water, around historic sites, or through your own neighborhoods. Clubs frequently offer trail lengths of 5 and 20 kilometers as well. There is no set start time, but a window of time, approximately 5 hours. Walkers go at their own pace and the only requirement is to finish by the end of the event, approximately 3 hours after the final start time. Trails are marked along the way. Most routes take two hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Many trails are stroller-friendly and provide great opportunity to explore the countryside. After the walk, everyone meets for food and drink in the hall.

Nervous about not speaking the language? Many clubs have a special table with someone who speaks English.
