FORT BLISS, Texas--In response to the increasing needs of thousands of incoming troops, the United Services Organizations, with the support of FirstLight Federal Credit Union, plans to open a second USO facility at Fort Bliss.

The proposed 6,300 square-foot facility will be located at the corner of Sergeant Majors Blvd. and Constitution on East Fort Bliss.

USO El Paso at Biggs will compliment and enhance the existing morale-boosting programs and service offered on post, to provide servicemembers the best possible support.

"I am excited to begin planning for a new USO center at Biggs Airfield," said Yolanda Castillo, center director. "As we continue to serve the military and El Paso communities, I am calling on the support of the local community to help make this center a huge success. I thank the corporate and individual donors that have committed their support to this effort."

Expected to open during the Winter of 2009, the new USO center will provide free e-mail and Internet access in a cyber cafe, a recreation area with pool tables, entertainment lounge with flat screen televisions, comfortable seating, video gaming stations, a library and an outdoor patio. Programs offered at the center will include the United Through Reading Military Program, USO Operation Phone Home and Operation Enduring Care.

Overall, the budget for the new USO center is approximately $3.5 million. To date, the USO has received commitments totaling approximately $1.5 million in donated facilities and in-kind services for the facility. As a nonprofit organization, the USO relies on the generosity of the American public to support its network of more than 130 centers worldwide.

Corporate in-kind donations and sponsorships, along with volunteer hours and monetary contributions, help to provide a touch of home to service members and their families. Donations to support the USO El Paso at East Fort Bliss should be mailed to: P.O. Box 6413, El Paso, Texas, 79906.
