CARLISLE BARRACKS, Pa. (April 8, 2015) -- Lt. Gen. David Halverson joined Gen. Daniel B. Allyn, Army vice chief of staff, to discuss leadership with up-and-coming U.S. and international leaders studying at the Army War College during the annual Army Leader Day.
Halverson, commanding general of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command and Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management, was one the principal Army staff officers brought to the college at Carlisle Barracks to engage the senior American and international military officers and civilians who make up the student body.
The Army Staff officers followed Allyn's keynote discussion with seminar engagements, each giving 16 students the opportunity for in-depth one-on-one discussion.
Army Leader Day, an integral part of the War College resident educational experience, provides an opportunity for Army senior leaders, military and civilian, to interact with the War College students. Students talk directly with senior Army leaders to learn about the unique aspects of leadership at the strategic level.
Leaders explain how they make decisions, how they operate in the interagency environment and how they achieve lasting change in the large organization that is the Pentagon, said Maj. Gen. Bill Rapp, War College commandant.
Many of the topics Halverson covered during a two-hour discussion with a group of students focused on "human capital" and touched on leader development at all levels -- the retention of outstanding young leaders and the challenges budget cuts signify for readiness, education and family programs.
Halverson, a 1998 Army War College graduate, shared lessons he learned as a leader at all levels, including strategic, where the students will find themselves upon graduation. Experiences like the oral comprehensive exams, the makeup of the students' seminar groups and the diverse perspectives provided by the international fellows will all serve them well in their next assignment.
