YONGSAN GARRISON- How can you measure your own determination and strength? Some, like Sgt. Joshua Harr, use their strength to run and march in half marathons. Others can find their strength in the reporting of sexual crimes. Strength and determination can be both physical and mental, and Sgt. Harr will combine both in the second annual SHARP (Sexual Harassment Assault Response Program)/Austin Half Marathon Shadow Run.
The month of April is dedicated to the observance of sexual assault awareness and prevention. In support of this month, MWR and the 65th medical brigade are sponsoring a half marathon. Sgt. Harr, of HHC, USAG Yongsan, has been training for this event since the end of February. While training may not always be easy, for Harr it is all mental.
"Basically for me, I keep my mind somewhere else, somewhere pleasant. I don't think about the pain, I just get up and go." The marathon consists of a ruck event and a running event around the Garrison. This isn't the first half marathon that Harr has participated in, "this is my second time. This year, I'm doing the ruck where last year I did the run. I blew out my knee at the end, but I still pushed through it." The hardest part for Harr is mile ten, because "it starts killing your legs, and you're like 'man why did I do this?', but you push through it. And like I said, afterwards the rewards are better." This year, Harr is determined to come in first place on the ruck march, to stay motivated Harr uses his music, "My shower voice keeps me going. I sing my favorite song Forever by Chris Brown."
Harr says that he would participate in this event, regardless if it was related to SHARP, but that for those that need strength in reporting a sexual crime, you should "go seek the help, because the only person stopping you from getting that help is yourself."
Many soldiers are running the half marathon for the training and the physical aspects, but others are running for a more personal reason.
"I get to run for a cause. I have a little sister who is 18, and I have always been a protective older brother. Now that I am a soldier, it feels rather personal that I get to promote awareness against sexual harassment and sexual assault," said PFC Lee, Jae seok. Lee is also up for the physical challenge, "it helps me become a better person. It is one of the best ways where I can experience the joy of pushing through my limits."
Lee has faced some challenges while training for the event, "The hardest part is when I have to participate in consecutive train-ups. I always have this fear in my heart right before each sessions, and I ask myself, 'Will I be able to do it again?' But once I get on the track, I am able to overcome the intimidation of running the distance."
The half marathon is a test of physical strength, and also helps in the fight against sexual harassment and assault. Like Harr said, the event is important because "you'll feel great about yourself and the accomplishment you achieved."
The run will be held on Saturday, April 11 from 0800 to 1200 at the Collier community fitness center.
