ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- As an effort to develop and educate new staff, the Human Resource Management office recently concluded a comprehensive 10-week new employee development program for 11 Headquarters, Joint Munitions Command employees.

The program is designed to provide newer employees with a broader understanding of how JMC operates and its role within the Army and the Army Materiel Command, the fundamentals of JMC's ammunition business, and how their position in their respective organization supports the overall success of the JMC mission.

When the new employee training began on January 26, the 11 staff members' length of service ranged from six months to one week.

To augment the classroom training, the employees completed a one-week site visit to Crane Army Ammunition Activity in Crane, Indiana, and a one-day, on-site visit to Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, Iowa, in order to see the execution of JMC's core competencies -- storage, distribution, demilitarization, and production.

Throughout the training, JMC leaders Brig. Gen. Kristin K. French, commander; Ms. Patricia Huber, JMC deputy commander; and JMC Command Sgt. Maj. Walton Jones, were able to spend time with the employees. Discussions involved gaining a better understanding of the students' experiences and providing the students with a leadership perspective on JMC's global reach to support the Warfighter and all of its Department of Defense's military services.

"It was a wonderful experience having Brig. Gen. French attend to discuss her insight to new employees as JMC's leader," said Faith Killian, Safety and Risk Management Directorate.

"This program was a command effort and its success is due to the training facilitators, the employee's sponsors and supervisors, the commanders and staff at CAAA and IAAAP, and the commitment of the employees," said Personnel, Development and Policy Chief, Michelle Timmerman, Human Resource Management Directorate. "All the classroom training was facilitated by internal JMC employees with background and expertise in the subject areas."

"I believe the New Employee Development Program created a great team-building environment, not only to develop a better understanding of the JMC business, but the new employees had the opportunity to meet other employees from other mission areas and gain a better appreciation for how this place runs," said Human Resource Program Specialist, Kara Stetson.

At the conclusion of the program on April 1, Jones welcomed and congratulated the employees and led a discussion on JMC.

"It is great to welcome you to JMC," said Jones. "I want to encourage you to continue to learn and grow while you are here. Always remember that JMC is not this building or the ammunition or the bombs that we produce, the true spirit of the organization is you. Thanks for what you do and for serving our great country."

JMC produces small-, medium- and large-caliber ammunition items for the Department of Defense. JMC is the logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed. JMC's logistics operation is unique to the Department of Defense and its industrial base is an important asset in supporting the Warfighter.
