CAMP HENRY, South Korea -- John L. Weal, chief of the Asset Management Branch, Logistics Readiness Center -- Daegu, was recognized at a retirement ceremony honoring him at Henry's Place here March 18.
Weal, an Army veteran with 47 years of combined federal service, retired March 30.
A native of New York, Weal joined the Army in 1966 at age 25. He spent one year in Vietnam then returned to the states. After a short hiatus, he accepted a civilian position in Korea as the property book officer for the 20th Support Group where he remained for almost 20 years.
Weal, who has been with U. S. Army Garrison-Daegu since June 1995, reduced fuel usage in Area IV by eight percent over the past six years. Weal was also key player when the USAG Daegu Directorate of Logistics was integrated into the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade in October 2012. His expertise resulted in zero items unaccounted for when the property was split between the garrison and the LRC.
"If the individual's interest is in federal service it is a fast moving field," Weal said. "It is evolving minute by minute. As long as you are a federal employee it means you have got to stay on top of the current technology."
"Regardless of the challenges that come with change, Mr. Weal stood out front as he did in uniform," said Randy Cheniault, former LRC-Daegu director. "Each day, he found ways to overcome adversity. He has done an exemplary job as the property book officer for LRC- Daegu. Accountability is paramount in the Army and Mr. Weal received commendable ratings on all command inspections from 1995 to the present."
Others also lauded Weal.
"Mr. Weal is by far the best property book officer I have ever been associated with in over 28 years of military and civilian service," said Patrick A. Roach, LRC-Daegu director. "He is truly a logistics master."
